This Week

Throughout this week, I finished up with the controller support, and began to transition into a new task. The most difficult part of finishing up controller support was getting the menus in the bouts to be properly recognized by Unity’s Input System in terms of what was the “first selected” option. My previous dev log goes into greater detail about this issue, and the fixes that I utilized to solve it. After tackling this task, I started to look into creating a natural idle behavior for the basement Speaker enemies. Daye explained the best way to accomplish this was to utilize the PolyNav 2D function in Unity and work with different animations to find something that looked natural. While I don’t have too much experience with creating animations in Unity, I always welcome a challenge!

Most of my week was spent looking through tutorials and seeing how other enemies’ idle animations were created in the game. This definitely helped to give me a better idea of what I need to do to accomplish this task. One of the most important things that I focused on was the ability for any animation to play after any other animation. This means that the Speaker enemy can walk left, then walk right immediately after, and its sprite would follow the direction that it was facing.

Plans for Next Week

Throughout the next week, I plan to continue on this path and keep familiarizing myself with Unity’s animation system as well as the PolyNav system. By the end of the week I’d like to try and have at least one of the Speaker’s idle animations completed. Hopefully from there it could become an easy transition to adding other animations, by copying and editing the first one.

This Week's Media

This week’s piece of media that I saw was the new season of the show Young Justice! For those who don’t know, Young Justice is an animated show about the adventures of a team of sidekicks of famous DC superheroes such as Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad, and Superboy. I remember watching this show on Cartoon Network when it first came out almost 10 years ago, and getting so excited for season 3 when it launched on HBO Max last year. I didn’t realize that season 4 had already released, with the first four episodes being available to watch. Definitely planning a binge to prepare for the new episode tomorrow!
