Dev Log #20 – Brian Glogower – Slithering Into Another Project

This Week

This week, I am finally beginning the transition from working on Monochrome to working on SNAK3! I’m very excited to get started on this new project, and I can’t wait to see where development goes! To get started I was given three tasks to get everything started.

The first of these tasks was to read through the documentation for the TopDown Engine. From everything that I’ve read so far, this is a very comprehensive guide on what I’ll need to know for the SNAK3 Unity project. It goes into detail about the different types of managers in the project and how they function within the game. This is definitely something to keep pinned for reference, as it really helped me so far to get an understanding of what I’ll need to be aware of.

The next task was to get the SNAK3 repository cloned from GitHub so that I’ll have the project files available to start poking around and seeing how everything looks in action.

(Unity was being a little difficult and didn’t want me to get a good screenshot.)

My final task to get started was to write a 2 page summary on the different aspects of the  currently available SNAK3 itch.io build. I wrote about some of the bugs that I experienced during my playtesting, as well as all of the things that I enjoyed about the game. I also rated the game out of five, and gave an excerpt about how I can see development going, and also added a few ideas that I had for certain aspects of the game.

Plans for Next Week

My plans for the upcoming week are mainly focused around getting more familiar with the SNAK3 Unity project. In addition, I was given some documentation to follow, and this will definitely help me to get a feel for everything I’m going to work on for the next few weeks.

This Week’s Media

This week’s piece of media is the announcement of Generation 9 of the Pokémon games, Scarlet and Violet! I was very shocked that they announced these games now, as it feels like Legends Arceus and Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl came out so recently. I’m really looking forward to this game especially since I skipped on Legends Arceus. The starters all look great and I still haven’t decided which one I want to pick yet. I just have to plead with Game Freak to keep Sprigatito on the ground. Please don’t make another buff humanoid starter, keep those paws on the ground like Persian or Liepard.
