Dev Log #02 – Theresa Merritt – Pixel Art Fun

Last Week

I worked on redefining my goals for the next 5 years to get a better sense of what I want to accomplish and what milestones I need to reach. Prior to co-op, I didn’t think much of what I wanted to do post-graduation. I think the plan has really helped me form a solid idea of what I want to shoot for near the end of college. I also worked with my team members to form a game design document for our upcoming game jam.

This Week

I have been working with my group in building our game Alchemical Adventure, a grid based top down platformer. You play as an alchemist that has to travel through a cave filled with monsters and obstacles to collect ingredients to create potions. You have to do it in a timely manner though because the ingredients can spoil fast. I’m currently working on the game assets using a simple pixel art style. I created sprites for the character and few of the environmental assets. Here are some I have done so far:

Next Week

I’ll be finishing up the rest of the assets and polishing them up before they get passed on to be implemented in Unity. I’m really happy with what we’ve put together so far. I can’t wait to see the final product!

Kingdom Hearts Hype

I am a huge fan of the Kingdom Hearts series. As part of the 20th anniversary (20 already?!), Square Enix revealed to us the trailer for Kingdom Hearts IV. The graphics are PHENOMENAL, the quality is so close to what they used for the opening and ending cinematics. Looking back at the graphics from the very first game is so wild now because of how much technology has advanced. The gameplay looks amazing too, it definitely gives off Shadow of the Colossus vibes. I’m super stoked to see what worlds we’ll get to explore in the next game!
